250,000 Words (and a New Metaphor)

When construction began on the Empire State Building in the 1930s, progress was slow at first. Workers had to dig deep and lay foundations before anything visible could rise. But once the groundwork was complete, momentum built quickly. Crews were adding nearly a floor a day. In no time, the structure shot up like bamboo, transforming the Manhattan skyline.

I feel the Grace Commentary has entered a similar stage of rapid progress.

Over the past year or so, we’ve added around 150,000 words of fresh content covering four New Testament epistles: Romans, Philippians, Colossians, and Philemon. Over the next 3 months, we’ll be adding another 120,000 words on the parables of Jesus. Altogether, that’s more than a quarter of a million new words in just over a year—an exciting milestone for the commentary.

Normally, at this time of the year, I compare our progress to a new model Ford. This year, however, I’m going for another metaphor…

This progress is encouraging, but it means little unless people are actually reading the Grace Commentary and growing in grace.

So who exactly is reading this thing?

According to my dashboard, the commentary is now read in 200+ countries by thousands of people each month. Since many readers are pastors and teachers, there is a multiplicative effect. We’re equipping leaders who are equipping others.

Imagine a mega-church full of people learning about grace, where every member is a leader being trained to teach others about grace. Except it’s not a mega-church. It’s people in hundreds of cities all over the world.

After more than fifteen years of writing about grace, I can honestly say we are entering unprecedented times. We have strong evidence that the message is spreading and more people are talking about grace. The proliferation of grace books, podcasts, and videos shows we’re witnessing the early stages of a genuine Grace Revolution.

And that’s why there is such a great need for a Bible commentary that interprets Scripture through the lens of grace. I hope you are as excited as I am to be part of what God is doing in this generation.

As our fifth year draws to a close, I want to thank our monthly supporters. Without you, there would be no Grace Commentary. Because of you, the church is being strengthened, and lives are being transformed.

Your support is helping people all over the world grow in the grace and knowledge of Jesus Christ.

God is good and you’re awesome!

Paul

What leaders are saying:

“Most commentaries are not focused on New Covenant theological perspectives which leaves them in the realm of mixture. I have used Paul Ellis’ website for years when researching subjects.” ~Clint Byars, lead pastor, Forward Church, Sharpsburg, GA
