John 5:9
Immediately the man became well, and picked up his pallet and began to walk.
Now it was the Sabbath on that day.
(a) Sabbath. The Sabbath was the day of rest mandated in the Law of Moses (Ex. 31:14, Lev. 23:3). The Sabbath day began at sunset on Friday and ended on sunset on Saturday.
Juan 5:14

This does not mean those who are sick are sinners who need to repent. The sin that opened the door to death was Adam’s sin (Rom. 5:12). But make sinful and unhealthy choices and there will be consequences. Sexual immorality can lead to disease. Adultery can destroy a marriage. Drunkenness can lead to liver damage. DIY religion can lead to burnout and heart disease.
We reap what we sow. This is why Jesus told the woman caught in adultery to go and sin no more. He wanted to break the destructive cycle. So he gave her the gift of no condemnation (setting her free from sin) and then he graced or empowered her to stay free. See pagpasok for John 8:11.
John 5:16
For this reason the Jews were persecuting Jesus, because He was doing these things on the Sabbath.
(a) “For this reason” was one of Jesus’s favorite sayings, and one adopted here by John. See pagpasok for Matt. 6:25.

Juan 5:18
Dahil dito'y lalong pinagsikapan ng mga Judio na siya'y patayin, sapagka't hindi lamang niya nilalabag ang Sabbath, kundi tinawag din niya ang Dios na kaniyang sariling Ama, na ginagawa ang kaniyang sarili na kapantay ng Dios.
(a) Patayin siya. On several occasions people tried to murder Jesus (Matt. 26:59, Mark 14:55, Luke 4:30, 22:2, John 7:19, 25, 11:53). But none succeeded. Jesus would freely lay down his life for all. No one would take it from him (John 10:18).
(b) Diyos ang kanyang sariling Ama. Religious people get angry when you call God your Father. “God is a distant judge watching you and recording all your sins. How dare you speak of the Almighty in such familiar terms?” They will persecute you thinking they are offering a service to God (John 16:2). By their actions they testify that they don’t know God or Jesus (John 16:3).
The Jews weren’t troubled that Jesus’ followers called him a messiah – messiahs come and go – but claiming to be God’s Son was a blasphemy worth of death (John 19:7).
Juan 5:19

First Adam chose the path of independence and cut himself off from life. Last Adam shows us how to live in dependence on God (John 10:37).
Juan 5:20

(a) Naririnig ang aking salita. Ang pananampalataya ay dumarating sa pamamagitan ng pakikinig sa salita ni Kristo.
Ang hindi nagkukulang na pag-ibig ng Diyos ang nag-uudyok sa atin na magtiwala sa kanya (tingnan pagpasok for 1 John 4:16). Since the love of God is revealed in Jesus Christ (John 17:26), faith comes from hearing about Jesus (Acts 15:7, 28:24).
(b) At naniniwala. (c) Hinimatay means to cross over or change places. The moment you put your faith in Jesus, you passed out of Adam’s family and were placed into God’s family. Crossing over from death to life is a one-way trip. Once the Lord takes hold of you, he will never let you go (John 10:28).
(d) Buhay na walang hanggan ay nabubuhay magpakailanman sa pagkakaisa kay Jesus; tingnan mo pagpasok for John 3:15.
(e) Has passed out of death into life. Once upon a time you were dead in sins and separated from the zoe-life of God (see pagpasok for Eph. 2:1). But the moment you put your faith in Christ you crossed over from death to life. Whoever believes in Christ has eternal life and shall not perish (John 3:15-16).

Ang Anak ng Diyos. Kadalasang tinutukoy ni Jesus ang kanyang sarili bilang Anak ng Tao (tingnan pagpasok for Matt. 8:20). But on a few occasions he acknowledged that he was the Son of God (John 3:18, 10:36, 11:4, Rev. 2:18).

(a) An hour. While the other apostles spoke of living in the last days and a coming day of the Lord (Heb. 1:2), John preferred shorter metaphors. He said we are living in the last hour (1 John 2:18) and spoke of the coming hour of the Lord.
(b) Hear. The Lord will return with a shout to raise the dead (1 Th. 4:16).
Juan 5:29

Ang mga gumawa ng mabubuting gawa. What are the good deeds Jesus wants us to do and which lead to eternal life? He has just told us: “He who hears My word, and believes Him who sent Me, has eternal life” (John 5:24). Doing good is hearing and believing Jesus. Indeed, this is the work of God (see pagpasok for John 6:29).
Jesus is speaking to religious Jews who were trying to kill him (verse 18). Jesus doesn’t rebuke these people for being murderous, but for being unbelievers. “You refuse to come to me to have life” (John 5:40). “If you believed Moses, you would believe me, for he wrote about me” (John 5:46).

(a) You do not believe. The religious Jews considered themselves a God-fearing people. They had faith in the one God, yet they persecuted his Son and tried to kill him (John 5:18). Thus their faith was a dead and useless faith for it was not accompanied by the work of believing in the One sent by God (see pagpasok for Jas. 2:14).

Juan 5:40

(a) You are unwilling to come. We are not born immortal (Rom. 2:6–8). Eternal life is a gift we receive when come to Christ (John 3:15, 5:24). Those who refuse to come to Christ will not have eternal life but remain dead in their sins (Eph. 2:1).
(b) Life. Two kinds of life are described in the Bible; the psuche– o kaluluwang buhay na minana natin kay Adan at sa zoe– or spirit life that comes from God (John 5:26). It’s the second kind of life that is described here. See pagpasok para sa Bagong Buhay.
John 5:42
but I know you, that you do not have the love of God in yourselves.
(a) I know you. I know your hearts.
(b) Love. The original noun (agape) describes the love that comes from God. God is the source and definition of agape-love (Eph. 2:4, 1 John 4:8, 16). “Love is from God” (1 John 4:7). Unlike the brittle love of man, the love of God is unconditional and self-sacrificing (Eph. 5:25, 1 John 3:16). The agape-love of God is patient, long-suffering, and hopeful and never fails (1 Cor. 13:4–8).
(c) You do not have the love of God. They had rejected God’s love. The issue was not that they didn’t love God, but they had not received God’s love for them. The religious Jews viewed God as a harsh judge rather than a loving Father. And because they did not know how much God loved them, they didn’t trust him. Instead of resting in the gracious promises God made to their forefather Abraham, the Jews were working hard to earn blessings that had already been given.
(d) Love of God. The unconditional love of God for us is the foundation of the new covenant. Indeed, it is the foundation of life, the universe and everything. The love of God is the answer to your deepest questions. Why did God make me? Why did he send his Son to rescue me? Why does he not hold my sins against me? Answer: Because God loves you with a love that will never give up.
Manmade religion portrays God as capricious and his love as variable. “Sometimes he loves you, sometimes he doesn’t.” But the gospel of grace declares God’s love for you is constant and shadowless (Ps. 136, Jas. 1:17). Religion prostitutes the love of God by putting price tags on his affection. “You have to earn his favor.” But the gospel of grace declares that God loved you while you were a sinner and nothing can separate you from his love (Rom. 5:8, 8:38–39). Religion demands that you impress God with the fervency of your love, but the gospel of grace inspires you to trust in your heavenly Father who loves you without limit (Eph. 3:17–19).

In the New Testament, there are more than 200 imperative statements linked with faith. Some of these statements exhort us to: receive Jesus (John 1:11-12), receive the message of Jesus (John 17:8), obey or heed the message or good news of Jesus (John 17:6) and turn to God in repentance (Acts 26:20).
Other scriptures encourage us to accept the word (Mark 4:20), confess Jesus as Lord (Rom. 10:9), call on the name of the Lord (Act 2:21), eat the bread of life (John 6:50-51), be reconciled to God (2 Cor. 5:20), submit to God’s righteousness (Rom. 10:3), and be born again (John 3:3, 7).

John 5:44
“How can you believe, when you receive glory from one another and you do not seek the glory that is from the one and only God?
Glory from one another. Self-righteous people crave validation from others. They wear masks and put on a show because have not received their Father’s affirmation. Perversely, the desire to receive praise from fickle people hinders them from seeking the greater honor that comes from God.
John 5:45
“Do not think that I will accuse you before the Father; the one who accuses you is Moses, in whom you have set your hope.
